Tile repair in Jacksonville: what we fix and how far it goes
Tile trouble shows up three ways: tiles that tent up off the floor, tiles that crack, and tiles that lie flat but sound hollow when tapped. Each one says something different about what is going on underneath, so the fix depends on which you have.
For a handful of cracked or loose tiles, we cut out the damaged pieces, clean the old thin-set off the slab and set replacements with full mortar contact. For tenting, we lift the raised section, find out why it lost its bond, and add the movement joints it was missing. When most of the room has let go, a new tile floor is the honest answer, and we will say so.
Matching is what people worry about most. Spare tiles saved from the original job are the best source, so check the garage, attic and closets before the visit.
- Tap-testing the whole room to map hollow and loose tiles
- Cutting out cracked tiles without chipping the ones beside them
- Scraping old thin-set and checking the slab for cracks or moisture
- Crack-isolation membrane over slab cracks before new tile goes down
- Perimeter and field movement joints added where the floor needs them
- Regrouting and sealant work blended into the surrounding floor

What we look for
Why does tile pop, crack or sound hollow?
Tenting comes from movement with nowhere to go. Tile grows slightly with heat and moisture, and when nothing soft sits at the walls or across a big room, the stress shoves tiles up into a ridge. TileLetter, the tile trade magazine, names sunlight, structural movement and moisture as typical triggers. A sunny stretch of tile beside a sliding glass door is a classic spot.
Cracks that stay inside one tile usually trace back to a void in the mortar or a dropped pan. A crack running in a straight line across several tiles more often follows a crack in the slab below.
Hollow tiles have lost contact with the mortar, or never had enough. Under ANSI A108.5, as the Ceramic Tile Foundation explains, interior floors need at least 80 percent mortar contact, rising to 95 percent in showers and outdoors. Voids leave a tile unsupported, which is how hollow tiles end up cracking.
- A sharp crack or pop, then a raised ridge of tiles
- Grout crumbling or splitting along one line
- Tiles that rock or click when stepped on

Our process
Pulling and resetting tile without disturbing the rest
Tile is unforgiving: one slip of a chisel and a good tile becomes a broken one. The work goes in this order.
1Tap-test and map
We tap every tile in the room with a hard tool, mark the hollow ones with tape and photograph the layout. Patterns matter: trouble along walls, near doors or in the sun points to missing movement joints.
2Track down matching tile
Spare boxes come first. If there are none, we check the back of a removed tile for a maker’s stamp and measure its actual size and thickness. If no match exists, we talk through a border, a transition or a larger replacement.
3Cut out the damaged tiles
Grout around each tile is cut out first, so the neighbors are not stressed. The damaged tile is broken from the center outward and lifted in pieces, keeping the chisel off the surrounding edges.
4Prepare the slab
Old thin-set is scraped or ground flat. We look for slab cracks and moisture under the removed tiles. Hairline cracks get a crack-isolation membrane before anything new is set.
5Set tile with full coverage
Replacement tiles are back-buttered and set in a notched-trowel bed, and we lift one to check contact. Where tenting started, movement joints go in at the perimeter and in the field, following TCNA Handbook EJ171.
6Grout, seal joints and walk through
Grout is matched as closely as possible, and movement joints get a flexible sealant rather than grout. We walk the floor with you and explain how long to keep heavy loads off while it cures.

Price and paperwork
Cost drivers for tile repair, and the standards a fix should meet
What changes the price of a tile repair
The count and spread of damaged tiles set the starting point. Five cracked tiles in one corner take less time than five scattered across a kitchen.
Matching comes next. Spare tiles keep the job small. Sourcing a discontinued tile, or adding a border because none can be found, adds time. Large-format porcelain and natural stone such as travertine are harder to cut out cleanly and may need sealing afterward.
Tenting usually costs more than cracks. TileLetter notes that resetting loose tiles alone is often temporary, so a lasting fix may mean cutting movement joints along the walls or relaying the affected section. Pulling baseboards to make room for a perimeter joint, bridging slab cracks with membrane, regrouting a wider area so the color blends, and pulling a toilet in a bathroom each add a line to the written quote.
Licensing, permits and tile standards
Florida does not let local governments require a license for tile and marble job scopes, and tiling is generally exempt from building permits, as decided by the local building official. Confirm with your city or county before work starts.
Industry standards define a sound repair. TCNA Handbook EJ171 calls for movement joints at the perimeter and changes of plane. Interior field joints go roughly every 20 to 25 feet, tightening to 8 to 12 feet where tile gets direct sun or moisture. ANSI A108.5 sets the minimum mortar contact under each tile.

Why JW
Why homeowners trust JW with tile work
JW has a 5.0 rating from 82 Google reviews. Tile jobs show up among them, including a master-bathroom tile replacement and a shower repair. The same praise runs through the rest: on time, clean, fair on price and easy to communicate with.
Clean matters on tile, because cutting and grinding make dust, and tidy job sites are one of the things reviewers mention most. If baseboards come off to open a perimeter joint, JW paints too, so the trim goes back finished. Tile installation and coatings stay in-house, which keeps a repair that grows into a replacement with the same crew. Owner Jimmie Wilson handles these repairs himself and brings more than 30 years of hands-on finishing experience to matching and setting the new pieces.

Questions
Tile repair questions, answered
What causes tile tenting (tiles popping up)?
Tenting happens when tile expands with heat or moisture and has no room to move. The usual causes are missing movement joints at the walls or in a large field, weak mortar bond, and sun on tile beside glass doors. TCNA Handbook EJ171 tightens field joint spacing to 8 to 12 feet where tile gets direct sun, so sunny rooms need joints closer together.
Can you replace a few cracked tiles without redoing the whole floor?
Yes, as long as matching tile exists and the tiles around the damage are still well bonded. We tap-test the room first. If the hollow area spreads well past the cracked pieces, patching only moves the problem. Spare tiles from the original job make the best match, because new production runs can differ slightly in shade.
Is popped tile a trip hazard I should fix right away?
Yes. A tented ridge has sharp, raised edges that catch toes and bare feet, and the CDC reports that 1 in 4 adults 65 and older falls each year. Keep traffic off the area and do not hammer the tiles back down, which cracks them. Save any loose pieces, since they help us find a match.
Does tile tenting mean my slab is failing?
No, usually not. Tile consultants writing for CTASC say tenting usually traces to the tile installation, not the concrete. The slab can play a part as a moisture source or through shrinkage cracks. A crack that keeps widening, or floors that slope, deserve a structural look, which in Florida falls to state-certified contractors rather than a tile crew.
Can hollow-sounding tile be fixed by injecting adhesive instead of pulling it up?
Yes, sometimes, for one or two tiles that sound hollow but are not cracked or moving. Adhesive goes in through small holes drilled in the grout joints, and the holes are re-grouted. Tile consultants writing for CTASC are skeptical when many tiles in a room sound hollow, because that points to a poor bond across the floor, and injection only treats the symptom.
